The 2023 Academy Awards wrapped up with a big win for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”, which claimed Best Picture in what was a major victory for quirky, mind-bending, multiverse storytelling. Directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (the Daniels), this film about a Chinese-American immigrant navigating alternate realities won hearts (and trophies) across the board, taking home seven Oscars, including Best Director, Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, and Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan. The movie, with its offbeat humor and heart, resonated with voters who seemed to have no trouble accepting the strange and surreal in a world that already feels a bit like one big multiverse.
In the end, Everything Everywhere All at Once was the big winner of the night, and we can’t help but think, if Skeletor was watching from his lair in Snake Mountain, he’d probably be just a little jealous. After all, he’s spent years trying to conquer the multiverse and hasn’t managed to snag a single golden statue. But don’t worry, Skeletor — perhaps in some alternate universe, you are the Best Picture winner. Or maybe you’re just a best picture — of what happens when a villain gets way too obsessed with power.
